Splash Camp: Our View
The Kwara Concession Camps operated by Kwando Safaris in Botswana are some of our favourite camps in the Okavango Delta. For many years it has been recognised that the Kwara Concession offers some of the finest and most exclusive game viewing in Africa.
But up until now, the largest camp in the concession, Kwara Camp, has been a relatively simple camp. Compared to other Okavango Delta camps that are newer or more recently upgraded, the tented rooms at Kwara were more simple and rustic looking. But all this has changed. The time has finally come to bid farewell to Kwara Camp as well as the smaller Little Kwara which closed in May/June 2018. These have been replaced by the brand new upgraded Splash Camp which opened in June 2018 on the same Kwara Concession.
Splash Camp has bigger and far smarter rooms and has 12 rooms including 2 family rooms. All rooms overlook a seasonal water pan in the Okavango Delta, which will attract abundant game. The rooms at Splash Camp are exceptionally well spaced apart offering lots of privacy in each room.
Whilst certainly not the cheapest option in the Okavango Delta, price wise Splash Camp is significantly cheaper than most other Delta camps that offer the same high quality game viewing and guiding as well as top quality accommodation.
This makes Splash Camp at the Kwara Concession in the Okavango Delta great value for money for clients whose main focus is a superb African Safari Experience.

Splash Canp: The Details
There is no doubt that the game viewing is the highlight at Splash Camp. The private Kwara Concession is superb with a huge diversity of dry and wetlands areas, forest and floodplains. These varied habitats on the Kwara Concession mean that it attracts an unusually diverse range of animals and predators compared to other areas in the Okavango Delta. Splash Camp also has amazing sightings of the highly endangered African Wild Dogs and cheetahs as well as the “must see” animals like lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo.
In addition to game drives, Splash Camp is also able to offer mokoro and boat safaris usually all year round, although there may be a few months when water levels are too low to do this. For clients visiting Botswana who only have time to see one Okavango Delta Camp, Splash Camp, is an exceptionally good choice as it offers an excellent all round African Safari Experience.
Like other camps from Kwando Safaris, the guiding at Splash Camp is outstanding and there is a real focus on the actual safari activities here compared to other camps. The guiding in Botswana are generally good but we have found that the guides at the Kwando Safari Camps seem to work particularly hard to locate the wildlife and Splash Camp is no exception to this. Splash Camp being located on a private concession, means that game drives are permitted to go off road and exciting night drives are also offered. As with all the Kwando Safari Camps in Botswana, during the game drives you will have a driver/guide as well as a tracker on the vehicles, which is unusual as most other camps only have one driver/guide.
And the trackers really are exceptionally talented at tracking the wild life!
The rooms and facilities at Splash Camp are also a real upgrade on the camps that used to be in the Kwara Concession. They also represent a change in style for Kwando Safaris. Unlike the more classic tented safari camps that used to be here, the rooms at Splash Camp are much more modern and not tented.
The rooms at Splash Camp have wooden walls with a special metal roof that is designed to absorb heat and insulate the rooms- so they should be cooler in summer and warmer in winter than tented rooms. The rooms are rectangular in shape and very spacious. At one end is the lounge area and the bathroom at the other end. The bed is positioned in the middle of the room and has a mosquito net and ceiling fan. Each room has a large balcony area overlooking the seasonal pan. All rooms at Splash Camp are positioned so that they look onto the pan, with 6 on one side and 6 on the other side and the communal lounge area in between.
Although the rooms at Splash Camp are not tented, one of the things that we love is that the whole front section of the room is floor to ceiling mesh windows and a sliding mesh door. There are canvas flaps that can be pulled down if it rains but otherwise you can choose to leave this fully open. That means that you still get the really close to nature experience that you get with tented rooms and you can hear all the sounds of the African Bush as you sleep at night. When you wake up in the morning you get wonderful views of the African Bush from your bed!
Other new facilities in the room at Splash Camp include power points, so it is now possible to charge limited appliances in your room. The communal lounge facilities at Splash Camp are also upmarket and offer ample seating areas to relax in, including a large swimming pool. This means that even when Splash Camp is fully booked it will not feel crowded.
In the Okavango Delta Splash Camp is perfect for clients looking for a fantastic African Safari Experience combining upmarket accommodation and facilities with top guiding and game viewing. With the luxury rooms this is now a fantastic option in the Delta at the higher end of the market whilst still being competitive with other high end safari operators like Wilderness Safaris.
Splash Camp offers great value for money and we expect it be very popular. We recommend planning as far in advance as possible as Splash Camp is likely to get very booked up.
