Matemwe Lodge: Our View

Matemwe Lodge is a relaxed boutique style lodge on the quieter northeast coast of Zanzibar perfecting the laid back tropical island experience, making it one of our favorite places on this magical island. Matemwe sits on an outcrop with views of a beautiful coral fringed lagoon and white sand beaches in an extremely peaceful atmosphere, making it impossible to not unwind.

The lodge consists of twelve tastefully decorated spacious beach chalets along the rocky coast, each chalet is set wide apart and separated by palm trees, ensuring full privacy. The rooms are organic and eco friendly, with solar powered lighting and heated water. The layout of the room blends to its beach location and the decoration accordingly, giving an all over natural feel. The added experience of being able to view the glistening Indian Ocean and nights sky from the comfort of your bed highlights the beauty of the lodges location. Each chalet has a private veranda with a sofa and hammock and two of the chalets have a private plunge pool, but its a gamble if you will be lucky enough to end up in one of them. The beach is secluded and to the side of the lodge, accessible through a private walkway.

What makes Matemwe Lodge so special in comparison to other lodges, is the close proximity to Mneba Island, one of the best diving areas on the island. It is a perfect location for celebrating a special occasion like a honeymoon or anniversary. The much heard cliche of "Once you have been there, you will always want to go back" is very appropriate to this special little piece of tropical heaven.

Matemwe Lodge: The Details

The laid back island lifestyle wouldn't be complete without daily fresh seafood, relaxing massages and sunset cocktails. Your daily routine at Matemwe Lodge is nothing more than pure indulgence and enjoying all aspects of the beach lifestyle. Comfort and service are a high priority for the staff, ensuring your days are blissful however if you require some extra luxury we suggest an upgrade to the Matemwe Retreat or the beautiful Matemwe Beach House, which is easily located right next door.

Zanzibar has long been the idyllic beach location for many, two sisters from Sweden thought exactly the same twenty years ago and in searching for a location to build their secluded and peaceful lodge Matemwe Beach ended up being their first choice. Over time other parts of Zanzibar have experienced a boom in tourism and retreats while Matemwe has been lucky enough to remain isolated from the hustle and bustle which comes with a flood of increased tourists, still off the beaten track and simply far from it all.

Matemwe Lodge consists of only twelve beautiful beach chalets all overlooking the Indian Ocean. Each chalet has a private veranda and is furnished with large hammocks and sofas, perfect for whiling away the time as the occasional dhow drifts past in the distance. A strong focus of on environment and eco-friendly materials has been a foot hold over the past twenty years and Matembwe has been an outstanding model as an example of how an up-market lodge can have a positive effect on its surroundings. Matemwe has proudly supported the neighboring fishing village of Kigomani by providing clean drinking water, supported the supply of electricity and assisted in financing a school and medical clinic, as well as set up scholarships for their students.

To add Matemwe has initiated a garbage collection scheme to help improve waste control on Zanzibar, keeping the island clean. With such a passion in the environment and conservation it is no surprise that Matemwe has introduced a hatching site for green turtles on its secluded beach, every year green turtles hatch here, ensuring the survival of this important local species.

Staying at Matemwe you will find it difficult not to sit in your hammock all day and watch the world go by at a slow pace, however if you can pry yourself from a pure state of relaxation there are a number of activities available to the more active guests. Snorkeling and diving at the marine park in Mnemba Atoll is a popular favorite by all, undertake an opportunity to go deep sea fishing or go though time on an excursion to the historic Stone Town, not to forget the famous Spice Tours and Dhow boat sailing trips. Although if all of this sounds a little to exhausting simply enjoy the pristine location and beach strolls along the coast.
