Chindeni Bush Camp
Chindeni Bush Camp: Our View
If budget permits we always recommend that clients visiting Zambia try and include one of the more remote ‘Bush Camps’ in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. This gives clients a true wilderness experience as well as the opportunity to participate in the unrivalled Walking Safaris that South Luangwa National Park is famous for. Chindeni Bush Camp is one of these remote Bush Camps, indeed one of our favourites. Located in the Southern sector of the Luangwa National Park, Chindeni Bush Camp is one of five small camps operated by The BushCamp Company in this area. Only The BushCamp Company has camps in this part of the South Luangwa National Park – resulting in a Safari experience that is peaceful and exclusive – in particular without the unwelcome intrusion of too many other Safari vehicles.
Chindeni Bush Camp has a gorgeous location, positioned high up above the main Luangwa River, overlooking the magnificent Chindeni Hills. With only four rooms, this is an exclusive, intimate camp. The rooms are of an impressive size. This is one of the few bush camps in South Luangwa National Park that has tented rooms - which we feel always adds extra romance to the Safari experience. Combined with the fact that the game viewing in this area of the Park is exceptional, as are the guides, Chindeni Bush Camp really delivers a superb Safari experience.
Chindeni Bush Camp is more expensive than the lodges located in the Mfuwe Bridge area near the entrance gate, but compared to the other remote bush camps in South Luangwa National Park it is very competitively priced. It is important to remember that the quality of service and accommodation at Chindeni Bush Camp is excellent. We would rate it on the same level as top end operators in other premier Safari areas such as the world renowned Okavango Delta in Botswana - where the camps would cost more than double the price of Chindeni Bush Camp!

Chindeni Bush Camp: The Details
The authentic Safari tented rooms at Chindeni Bush Camp are really impressive. They are probably some of the largest and best appointed tented rooms of any camp in the South Luangwa National Park, boasting stunning views over the Luangwa River and the Chindeni Hills. The tented rooms of Chindeni Bush Camp have wooden floors, four poster beds and vaulted canvas ceilings - as well as a large, private, outside deck. A semi open plan bathroom with shower and toilet is at one end of the room while there is a comfortable lounge area at the other end. Like most other Bush Camps in South Luangwa lighting is by solar power only. At night the camp staff hang up solar lights in and around the tented rooms to provide light. The rooms at Chindeni really are incredibly romantic.
Completing the facilities at Chindeni Bush Camp are a large lounge, dining and Boma area on raised wooden deck which share the same beautiful views over the river and Chindeni Hills as the tented rooms. Watching the sun rise over the Chindeni Hills at breakfast is a truly memorable experience.
It is not just the camp itself that impresses though. We have always found the game viewing in this area of the park to be superb. On our last visit we had outstanding Leopard sightings as well as a sighting of one of the largest critically endangered African Wild Dog packs we have ever seen on Safari in Africa. The game drives are quite an adventure too with frequent river crossings! The area is perfect for the exhilarating Guided Walking Safaris that are offered. The activities here deliver the kind of wild and adventurous Safari that most clients dream of in Africa.
The service at the BushCamp Company camps deserves a special mention as well - it really is superb and they certainly make an extra effort to make things special for all guests. On our last visit we were surprised with lunch right out in the bush complete with a wood fired pizza oven and a bar that was set up in a shallow river bed - so we could enjoy sundowner drinks whilst sitting on chairs in the river!
