11 Day Ruaha, Nyerere National Park & Pemba Island Safari

Day 1: Arrival Dar es Salaam and air charter transfer to Jongomero, Ruaha National Park
Upon arrival in Dar es Salaam you will be met by one of our representatives and assisted with the check for your air charter transfer to Ruaha National Park. From the Jongomero airstrip, you will be driven the short distance to Jongomero where a traditional communal safari lunch awaits.
Under a dappled riverine canopy, this secluded sanctuary is positioned on the banks of a dry riverbed which is a natural pathway for animals in search of water and is the most splendid spot to experience the region’s extraordinary diversity of animals, birds and plants. In the afternoon you will embark on your first game drive. Explore Ruaha’s undulating landscape which is home to giant baobabs and the Park’s rich variety of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, impala, eland, hippo, crocodile, lion and leopard.
Accommodation: Jongomero (incl. all meals, drinks and activities)
Days 2 to 3: Jongomero, Ruaha National Park
Each evening over drinks, you'll have the chance to discuss your plans for the next day with the camp managers. Whether you chose to explore by vehicle or on foot, the expert guides will ensure you enjoy the wealth of biodiversity Ruaha has to offer. Game drives around Jongomero are unique and cater for the safari connoisseur; the remote location situated more than 70km from the next nearest camp means Jongomero doesn't share its game viewing with any other guests or vehicles. Alternatively the camp offers a dawn game walk during the dry season. With the African sun warming your back, you’ll navigate the parched riverbeds while your guide tells you fascinating, often bizarre stories, about the local flora, fauna, insects, birds and animals.
Accommodation: Jongomero (incl. all meals, drinks and activities)
Day 4: Air charter transfer Jongomero to Siwandu Camp, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve)
You will depart Ruaha after breakfast for your flight to the Nyerere National Park, the largest of its kind in Africa. The Nyerere National Park is home to the most exceptional and diverse wildlife, with much of Tanzania’s elephant population, an abundance of hippo and an extremely healthy population of lion.
Siwandu Camp is a 10 minute game drive from the airstrip and is located in a grove of palms on the shore of Lake Nzerakera. This lakeshore location offers consistency of game viewing as the animals gravitate around the lake and is the only place in East Africa where you can experience water-based game activities.
After your orientation briefing you will have time to settle into your tented suite overlooking the lake. In the afternoon embarking on your first game activity followed by camp fire drinks, a delicious, freshly prepared, three course dinner under the stars and a peaceful sleep with the noises of the bush just beyond the canvas.
Accommodation: Siwandu Camp (incl. all meals, drinks and activities)
Days 5 to 6: Explore Nyerere National Park
At Siwandu game drives tend to take place after breakfast as by then, the animals have gravitated towards the lake to drink ensuring a far denser concentration of game around the camp.
Siwandu Camp offers a lovely wide range of game activities for guests to experience. Discover the landscape in 4WD open sided game vehicles, led by an expert driver guide. Alternatively take a leisurely boat cruise on our lake and the Rufiji River tributaries; venture close and watch animals from a different perspective ... or perhaps feel the thrill of a dawn game walk and have the opportunity to track animals and engage with the smaller habitats and ecosystems.
Accommodation: Siwandu Camp (incl. all meals, drinks and activities)
Day 7: Air Charter transfer Siwandu Camp to Pemba Island (via Dar es Salaam)
From the majesty of the bush, you’ll be whisked away to the castaway paradise of the Indian Ocean. This morning you’ll wave goodbye to the great Maasai giraffe and the other plains’ game on your final game drive to the airstrip, as you prepare to fly back to Dar es Salaam and from there to Pemba Island. On arrival at Pemba Island, you will be transferred by road to Mkoani Port where you will embark on a motorboat transfer to Fundu Lagoon.
You will disembark straight onto the private Fundu Lagoon pier in front of Fundu Lagoon Lodge.
You will then be shown to your spacious beach suite that is designed to fit within the local environment. Your suite comprises of a spacious tent under a roof woven of traditional all-natural materials and of a large private terrace facing the beach.
A great way to familiarize yourself with the local area is to enjoy a sunset trip on a dhow sailing boat (extra charge) that will provide you with beautiful views as the sun goes down. In the evening you can enjoy your delicious dinner of fresh fish on the beach in front of the lodge.

Day 8 to 10: Pemba Island
After waking up to the early morning sun you can go on a pre-breakfast beach walk or enjoy a swim. You may also opt to go snorkeling off the main beac. However, we would rather advise an excursion to Misali island (extra charge) to enjoy the natural and exotic marine life that inhabit the island and its surrounds. For those who are a little more energetic, there is the opportunity to go kayaking from Fundu Lagoon to gain a different perspective of the area.
A highlight for any trip to Pemba is to venture out on a dolphin excursion (extra charge). During this 2-3 hour adventure you will spend an extraordinary and blissful morning in the majestic company of dolphins.
Alternatively, you can explore the beach around Fundu Lagoon, taking a walk either on your own or led by a team member. Go to one of the nearby local villages to discover the history and culture of the area. At the end of a busy day, enjoy a cold beverage on your terrace above the Lagoon.
