Safari Lodges vs. Safari Camps: Which Wild Escape Wins Your Heart?

When it comes to experiencing the wild beauty of Botswana, deciding where to stay can prove to be a difficult decision. Among the many accommodation options, safari camps and safari lodges are the two main choices, each offering a unique way to connect with the stunning landscapes and wildlife. Understanding the differences between these two options, as well as the various types of safari camps, will help you choose the perfect base for your adventure. In this blog, we’ll explore the differences between safari camps and lodges in Botswana, dive deeper into mobile and permanent tented camps, and take a closer look at the distinct camps in the Okavango Delta.

Safari Camps versus Safari Lodges – what are the differences?

At a high level, safari camps and safari lodges offer different experiences, primarily in terms of luxury, immersion, and accessibility. Both provide exceptional wildlife viewing, but the vibe and style can vary significantly

Safari Camps generally focus on a more intimate, immersive experience in the heart of the wilderness. Many offer tented accommodations, some mobile, others permanent. While the facilities may be less permanent and more rustic, modern comforts are still prioritized, with comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, and delicious meals. The camps are usually smaller, with fewer guests, so the experience feels more personal and private.

On the other hand, Safari Lodges provide a more luxurious experience. These are often larger, more permanent establishments with spacious rooms or suites, private pools, and multiple dining options. Lodges tend to be more developed with a focus on comfort and relaxation. They may also offer spa services, pools, and guided activities, making them ideal for travellers who want to experience Botswana’s wilderness without compromising on luxury.

While lodges can be found in more accessible locations, camps (especially mobile ones) are often set up in remote, less accessible areas, giving you a sense of true escape.

Mobile Tented Camps: A True Wilderness Adventure

Mobile tented camps are one of the most exciting ways to experience a Botswana safari. These camps are temporary, set up in remote areas and moved seasonally to provide guests with a fresh perspective of the wild. They are usually smaller, with a limited number of tents, which creates a more private and intimate experience. The accommodations are often luxurious, with spacious tents, comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, and a cozy lounge area. However, the key appeal of mobile camps lies in their sense of adventure.

Since these camps are set up in such remote locations, they often bring you to areas that are difficult to access otherwise, allowing you to get off the beaten path. The beauty of mobile tented camps is the flexibility they offer, as they can be relocated to follow the best wildlife sightings throughout the year. This mobility allows you to witness different ecosystems and the full scope of Botswana’s wildlife.

While mobile camps are generally comfortable, they retain a sense of authenticity and rawness that makes them ideal for those seeking a truly wilderness-oriented experience. The camp’s temporary nature means you’ll likely feel more in tune with nature and the elements—there’s something incredibly special about hearing the sounds of the bush at night while staying in a mobile camp under the stars.

Permanent Tented Camps: A Blend of Comfort and Adventure

For those who still want the feeling of being “in the bush” but prefer a little more comfort and stability, permanent tented camps offer the best of both worlds. These camps have a more permanent infrastructure than mobile camps, with sturdy tents that are often raised off the ground, fixed wooden or stone structures, and well-developed amenities. The tents are typically larger and more luxurious, offering larger living spaces, elegant furnishings, and often a private veranda or plunge pool.

Though permanent camps are still built in remote locations, their facilities are more sophisticated. Here, you’ll find hot showers, gourmet dining, and even air-conditioning in some places. The charm of a permanent tented camp lies in its blend of luxury and wilderness immersion. You are still staying in a tent, but with all the comforts and amenities you need to relax after a thrilling day of game drives or boat safaris.

In Botswana, many luxurious permanent camps are set in prime wildlife areas, ensuring you’re always in close proximity to nature. They may be located near water sources, providing an excellent opportunity for wildlife sightings. While the experience might be a little less rugged than a mobile camp, it’s still intimate and personal, with a high level of attention to detail.

Okavango Delta: Dry vs. Wet Camps

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s most unique and diverse ecosystems, and it offers a wide variety of safari experiences. Here, the differences between dry and wet camps are especially notable, particularly when it comes to the way the seasons influence the safari experience.

Dry Camps are situated on higher ground or areas where the water level doesn’t fluctuate as dramatically. These camps are ideal during Botswana’s dry season, when the delta’s waters are lower. Here, game drives by 4×4 vehicles are the primary way to explore the region. Dry camps are typically found in areas with a mix of woodland and open savannah, where you’ll be able to see a variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo.

In contrast, Wet Camps are set in areas that have permanent water all year round, creating a landscape of water channels, lagoons, and marshes. These camps are typically reached by boat or mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), offering a completely different experience. Wet camps are perfect for clients who want a guaranteed experience of being able to do water activities and immerse themselves in the wetland scenery that the Delta is famous for. This is especially the case during the December- March season when water levels in the Delta can be very low and other camps may have very little water in the area. Expect serene, tranquil boat safaris through flooded channels, where you may encounter hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of bird species. Wet camps provide an exceptional opportunity for a more intimate, peaceful safari experience, often in places that are less accessible and more exclusive. It is important to note though that true wet camps do not offer game drives, they only offer water and walking activities. Big game viewing in these type of camps is usually very limited which is why it is advisable to combine wet camps with dry camps that offer game drives and good big game viewing.

Choosing the Right Safari Camp or Lodge in Botswana

Whether you’re drawn to the rustic charm of a mobile tented camp, the comfort of a permanent camp, or the luxury of a lodge, Botswana offers something for everyone. If you want to be closer to nature and enjoy a more adventurous, back-to-basics experience, a mobile tented camp is the way to go. On the other hand, if you prefer a little more luxury with your wildlife, a permanent tented camp or a safari lodge will give you all the comforts you desire.

For those visiting the Okavango Delta, consider whether you want to explore the wetlands by boat and immerse yourself in the quiet beauty of wet camps, or enjoy the classic safari experience with game drives in the drier parts of the Delta.

No matter your choice, Botswana’s diverse and breathtaking landscapes promise an unforgettable safari experience.
