Kwando Lagoon Camp: Our View

Kwando Lagoon Camp is one of our favourite camps in the Linyanti Concession in Northern Botswana. This camp is one of the flagship properties of Kwando Safaris.

Like in most other camps from Kwando Safaris the focus here is to offer an authentic and superb safari experience and the guides in Lagoon Camp really push hard to provide this. The game viewing here is known to be excellent, with a wide variety of resident wildlife and birds. Towards the end of the dry season (August-October) in particular this area attracts large herds of buffalo and elephants with the inevitable predators in pursuit! It is also is one of the best areas in Africa to see African Wild Dogs.

Kwando Lagoon Camp is located on a private concession and has access to large areas of dry land for day and night game drive activities (also off-road driving permitted) and seasonal walks. There is much more permanent water in this part of the concession making it very scenic and enabling Lagoon Camp to also offer boating and seasonal fishing activities. The camp itself is beautifully located overlooking the Kwando river.

Even though the Kwando concession hosts two of the Kwando Safaris lodges, they are positioned far from each other and in differing environments; ensuring an individual experience at each lodge.

This camp is a superb option for any client whose main priority is an intense safari experience and it is substantially cheaper than some other camps in the Linyanti region, making it great value for money.

Kwando Lagoon Camp: The Details

The 8 tented rooms at Kwando Lagoon Camp are spacious and quite luxurious. We loved the attention to detail and found the furnishings to be simple and elegant. The views out onto the Kwando River are a real highlight. Each room includes a small lounge area, a private verandah, ensuite bathroom with free standing bath, twin wash basins and indoor and outdoor showers.

The rooms are thatched and have large insect-proof-mesh picture windows and a mesh sliding door. In the very hot Summer months September through November these and the ceiling fans help to keep the rooms cool. However, in winter (June-August), it can be a bit chilly! We were there in June on our last visit and it really was very cold in the rooms at night.

The central, thatched guest area is built on raised decks with the dining room and bar. Upstairs is a cosy reading and library area. The swimming pool is nearby and linked by a walkway to the main area. Towards the riverfront there is an open boma (fire) area.

Activities at the camp are very much focused on game drives to view the fantastic wildlife in this area. Like at many of the other Kwando Safari camps the afternoon game drives are usually followed by a night game drive before returning for dinner. Lagoon Camp also has a double storey boat so they can offer lovely afternoon cruises on the Kwando river as well, water level permitting.
