Governors' Il Moran Camp
Governors’ Il Moran Camp: Our View
The Governors’ collection of camps were some of the first camps to open in the Masai Mara Reserve in the early 1970’s, which meant that they could choose wherever they wanted to locate their camps - and they definitely chose well! These camps are located in a very scenic area with possibly the best game viewing in the whole reserve. The Musiara Marsh nearby provides a year-round source of water which attracts abundant wildlife to the area. Big cat sightings are especially good. It was in this area that the famous BBC ‘Big Cat Diaries’ were filmed.
Governors’ Il Moran Campis situated on the Mara river- so during the migration some of the best river crossing points are just a short drive away. The location of the camp really is superb.
Il Moran Camp is one of three camps operated by the same company in this area - the other 2 camps are Governors’ and Little Governors’ Camp. Governors’ Il Moran Camp is the most upmarket and most expensive of these three camps, and also the smallest with only 10 tented rooms. It has a tranquil and peaceful location in dense woodland, right on the MaraRiver, one kilometre upstream fromGovernors’ Camp.
There is a huge difference in quality at Il Moran compared to the other Governors’ camps, especially since a major refurbishment was completed in 2018. Both the rooms and communal areas at Il Moran are much larger, look newer and are much more opulent than at Governors’ and Little Governors’!
Whilst Il Moran is quite a bit more expensive than the other Governors’ camps it is definitely worth the upgrade if clients have the budget. For those clients who want to enjoy the fantastic wildlife viewing in this area but also want truly luxurious accommodation and a small intimate camp, Governors’ Il Moran Camp is a superb option

Governors’ Il Moran Camp: TheDetails
Both the accommodation and the wildlife viewing are the highlights at Il Moran Camp. The 10 tented rooms are well spaced apart offering plenty of privacy. The rooms are very spacious - light and airy with large mesh windows. A soft refurbishment in 2018 means that the rooms look really new and fresh. The centre-piece of each room is a large double bed with carved wood frame, plus a large comfy sofa in front of it. The ensuite bathroom is also very spacious and filled with light. As well as a walk in shower and flush toilet there is also a claw foot bath for extra indulgence! Outside there is a large veranda with wicker chairs, sofa, and hammock - the perfect place to sit and relax and watch the river flow by.
The communal areas are equally impressive. The very large dining/lounge/bar area provides ample space to relax and is a lovely combination of contemporary and traditional African décor. Dark chunky wooden tables contrast with large colourful sofas and beaded chandeliers, with cow hide rugs and African art and artefacts dotted around. Outside is a huge decking area overlooking the river with lots of tables to allow for outside dining. The sunken fire pit is the perfect place to relax with a drink in the evening. Spa treatments are offered in the privacy of your room. There is no swimming pool though which seems to be typical of most camps in the Masai Mara.
The camp itself is gorgeous but of course it is the game viewing that clients come here for, and this really is superb! With nearly 50 years’ experience the camp knows how to take full advantage of their excellent location. At any time of the year you are going to have fantastic sightings. This area is Big Cat heaven with lion, leopard and cheetah regularly seen. And if you visit during the migration season, you have the bonus of viewing one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth, with the grass plains surrounding the camp teeming with wildlife. There is also a real focus on maximising the time that the clients are out on Safari. Governors’ Il Moran Camp offers 3 game drives per day - an early morning drive departing at sunrise, a late morning drive, and an afternoon game drive. Alternatively, clients can opt for a full day game drive with picnic lunch. Last time we visited here the full day game drive with picnic lunch was a very popular option for many of the clients. At Il Moran land cruisers with only 4 seats per vehicle are used, which makes the game drives a more exclusive experience.
In addition to game drives, clients can also book hot air balloon flights, which are spectacular (additional cost). Governors’ have their own hot air balloon company. These balloons actually depart not far from Little Governors’ Camp which is just across the river. So Governors’ Il Moran Camp is very conveniently situated for ballooning!
