Mopiri Camp: Our View

Mopiri Camp is a pure water camp, located south of the panhandle on the north west of the Okavango Delta.  With permanent water year round, this camp makes the perfect start, or end, to your Okavango Delta experience.  Activities at Mopiri include motorboat cruises, and an overnight camping excursion where you can walk on the islands and enjoy a mokoro excursion.

Mopiri Camp is a 40 minute light aircraft flight from Maun, and then a short 10 minute boat ride into camp.  The lodge is located on the mainland, facing east, overlooking the Webora Lagoon, downstream from Guma. A series of enormous lagoons are interlinked by narrow papyrus lined channels which take you on an exhilarating motorboat ride deeper into the Delta where your ‘fly’ camp awaits. This OPTIONAL fly camp is an overnight activity, and although basic has everything one needs including stretcher beds in walk in dome tents, and a shared ‘long drop’ bush toilet. A three course dinner, cooked over the camp fire is served under the stars.  This excursion is your best opportunity to see wildlife, including hippo, crocodile, elephant, and plains game, such as the red lechwe and elusive sitatunga on the islands.

The birding in this region is stunning. With over 350 species including Pels Fishing owls and African Skimmers, the area is a paradise for bird watching.

Mopiri`s accommodation is simply lovely.  Large, spacious en suite tents, with decks facing the river, tastefully decorated and wonderfully comfortable furnishings all add to the relaxed atmosphere.  Mopiri Camp is run mostly by solar power, with a generator for back up, and all the rooms have electricity and charging stations for your cameras.

The camp is beautifully set out, with the rooms spaced well apart, and lots of different areas for guests to relax, including 2 swimming pools, a boma and a hide.

 Mopiri Camp: The Details

With permanent water all year around Mopiri Camp is an excellent choice to combine with another ‘dry’ camp in the Okavango Delta.  Mopiri Camp is all about the scenery, the water, and stunning bird life.  There is of course wildlife there, but this ‘wet’ camp should not be seen as a game viewing destination, but rather a Delta Experience.

The staff at Mopiri Camp are wonderful – friendly, happy, and the entire camp is very clean and fresh.  The food served is excellent, including the bush dinner and breakfast cooked on the fire at the island camp! The guides, who generally come from the area, are extremely knowledgeable on not just animals, but birds and plants too. Overall Mopiri Camp is an awesome option, and offers competitive rates, making it well worth considering on any Botswana itinerary.
