Khwai Expeditions Camp: Our View

Khwai Expedition is a really well priced mid-range safari camp in the Khwai concession and especially attractive to families, as it welcomes children of all ages (certain terms and restrictions apply). It is perfectly located in a game rich area between the Moremi Game Reserve and the Chobe National Park.

Khwai Expeditions Camp is locally owned and combines traditional African character and hospitality. Guests enjoy a warm welcome by the staff singing on arrival before checking into one of the six well designed, comfortable and ensuite safari tents. The camp’s dining and entertainment areas enjoy the shade of a giant jackalberry tree and are all facing a picturesque lagoon, offering mesmerising views, often including wonderful wildlife sightings. A traditional African open fire area is available for those evening fireside tales and campfire stories under the African skies. The camp also has a secluded pool for those that wish to enjoy a cool dip in the midday African heat.

Set amidst very diverse habitats including riverine woodlands, Mophane woodland, open savannah, and lagoons, Khwai Expeditions Camp provides an all-around varied and interesting game experience. Game drives, village visits and Mokoro rides are offered here free of charge as part of the lodge's activities. Khwai Expeditions Camp can be accessed by road for self-drivers (4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended) or by light aircraft charter. The Khwai concession is however open to the public and therefore tends to be busier than the private reserves in the Okavango Delta.

 Khwai Expeditions Camp: The Details

The six luxury canvas safari  tents as well as the family cottage are tastefully decorated, spacious and have indoor and outdoor showers, some also have bathtubs. The family cottage is separate from the camp and  comfortably sleeps 2 adults and 2 children. As is customary in most safari camps in the area, Khwai Expeditions’ tents are built on slightly raised platforms all featuring a decent size balcony on a wooden deck, where guests can sit and enjoy a magnificent view overlooking the seasonal lagoon in front of the camp. It is a real treat to watch the wildlife and birdlife in their natural habitat from the comfort of one’s own room in the middle of the African Bush.

Khwai Expeditions Camp has a serious approach towards low impact eco-tourism and towards sustainable preservation and conservation practices. In line with this thinking and in order to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the camp, Khwai Expeditions uses solar power for the tent’s lights as well as to heat the water.

This area is one of the most scenic and wildlife rich areas of the Okavango Delta. Whether you are out on a game drive, a guided bush walk, or  gliding down one of the many water channels in a traditional mokoro, you will without a doubt encounter a truly wild and unique game experience. Game drives promise to be adventurous and are undertaken in customized safari back vehicles, driven by experienced guides. Guest will explore the Khwai Concession or the Moremi Game Reserve, with drives through pristine and wild habitats combining floodplains, riverine vegetation and drier woodland areas. Remember the downside here is that this area is open to the public and often busy with large numbers of visitors.

This remarkable area is renowned not only for its abundance of both fauna and flora but also the Khwai village on the north bank of the Khwai River. The Khwai community, adjacent to the northern region of Moremi Game Reserve, has a population of just 400 people who are predominately of either BaBukakhwe or River Bushmen descent. The opportunity of a visit to this local village and a cultural interaction with this people should not be missed.

Children of all ages are welcome at Khwai Expeditions Camp. Dependant on availability private vehicles (additional charge) are required for children under the age of 6. The camp offers no baby-sitting services and children must be under the supervision of parents at all times.
